Royal Greenwich is embarking on major service changes and we are looking for someone who can embed a culture of best practice and continuous improvement in operational health and safety.

Are you passionate about health and safety and ready to make a real impact in your community? We are seeking a proactive and experienced Health and Safety Manager to join our team. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our workforce and the public across a range of vital frontline services, including waste management, street cleansing and fleet management.

About the Role

As an Operational Health and Safety Manager, you will be responsible for promoting and maintaining the highest standards of health and safety across our operations. You will work closely with operational teams and senior management to drive continuous improvement and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and best practices.

You will:

  • Provide expert advice and guidance on health and safety matters across our range of services.
  • Conduct risk assessments, audits, and inspections to identify hazards and ensure safe working practices.
  • Develop and deliver training, briefings, and reports to staff and stakeholders.
  • Lead on the implementation of health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Analyse and present complex data to support decision-making and service improvements.
  • Be the service lead on business continuity.

We are looking for someone with: 

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or higher).
  • In-depth knowledge of operational practices in waste management and fleet services.
  • Full manual Category B driving licence with no more than 3 unspent points.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels.
  • Strong organisational and IT skills, including data analysis and presentation.
  • Confident leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to challenge unsafe practices.
  • Proven problem-solving and influencing abilities, with a track record of driving change.
  • Demonstrable experience in a health and safety role within environmental services or fleet management.
  • A proven track record of delivering measurable health and safety improvements in an operational setting.
  • A clear understanding of and commitment to the Council’s equal opportunities policies and staff values.

You will generally work a 35-hour standard Monday to Friday week, however, flexibility is essential to meet the needs of the service.
