Job Introduction

Eltham Crematorium

Helping to make their day that little bit easier…………………

When loved ones are no longer with us, it’s right that we want to honour their memory. Eltham Crematorium, located within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, provides two chapels, a Garden of Remembrance, a Chapel of Remembrance, and a walled Memorial Court, so families and friends can pay respect to their loved ones amidst peaceful surroundings.

Opened in 1956, it is the UK’s busiest crematorium hosting up to 3,000 cremations each year and an average of 12 funerals per day. The crematorium is operated by a Joint Committee comprising of Royal Borough of Greenwich, London Borough of Bexley and Dartford Borough Councils.

As a Crematorium Operative you’ll help to ensure those bereaved have the most positive a caring experience with us as possible. It’s your attention to detail that will make the day memorable, by helping to ensure the smooth running of the crematorium – whether that’s assisting in cleaning and preparing the chapels for a funeral, operating the music for a service, ensuring the grounds are spotless, sensitively facilitating the retention and disposal of remains, assisting with cremations or carrying out minor repairs as needed. You’ll also assist the mourners throughout services so that they have everything they need.

Ideally, you will have experience working within grounds maintenance within the bereavement services arena, with any supporting horticultural qualifications being highly beneficial. Your customer-service skills when dealing with those bereaved must be exceptional and you’ll also be used to dealing with plant machinery, tools, and other equipment, along with basic record-keeping. A general ‘can-do’ approach to gardening, maintenance and repair work, along with the kind of physical fitness needed to cope with long periods of standing in all weather conditions. Basic IT and good written and communications skills are also essential for this role. You’ll also be expected to undertake training to support the qualified cremator engineers with cremations and maintaining the associated equipment to comply with statutory guidance.

In return you will receive a range of benefits that include generous holiday, a range of flexible working arrangements and an excellent pension scheme.
